We, the undersigned residents and supporters of Piney Mountain and Appomattox County, respectfully request further review and reconsideration of the recently approved conditional use permit for RIfleman’s Resort, an outdoor, large-scale gun range located on Wildway Road, that includes military and police training and multi-day competitions.
Piney Mountain is a residential and agricultural community located near the Appomattox Court House, a site of national historical significance. The proposed use raises serious concerns related to public health, environmental contamination, agricultural sustainability, disability access, service animal safety, and long-term land compatibility.
This community includes families, veterans living with PTSD, individuals with autism, dementia, and other disabilities, residents who rely on service animals for medical alerts and daily safety, and working farms that depend on clean land, water, and stable environmental conditions.
We respectfully urge county officials and relevant state and federal agencies to pause implementation, conduct further review, and pursue alternatives that protect public health, uphold disability rights, preserve agricultural land, and respect the historic and rural character of Piney Mountain.
